The Post published School secretary bows out after 27 years with teddy bears'…

May 21st, 2012

GRANDMOTHER Pat Coysh shared centre stage at her leaving party with her trusted friend Teddy.

Mrs Coysh, who retired yesterday after 27 years as secretary at Ilminster Avenue Primary – now Ilminster Avenue E-Act Academy – in Knowle West decided to bow out with a teddy bears’ picnic. The pupils all brought their bears to an assembly to help raise money for the charity Action Research for Children.

Mrs Coysh, from Hanham, who will be 60 in September said she had the idea after seeing that the charity was marking six decades too with a campaign called Bring a Bear, Show You Care.

“They are 60 and I am retiring. It all seemed to fit in,” she said.

Mrs Coysh has lots of bears but Teddy is her oldest.

“He is a year younger than me. My father cycled all the way to Weston-super-Mare to buy him for me,” she said.

Mrs Coysh said that when she started at the school in the early 80s, after her two children were in school, she initially intended to stay only six weeks.

But she has remained at the primary long enough to see some of the pupils she knew in her early days there returning with their own children.

“If I stayed much longer, I’d be seeing their grandchildren,” she said.

Mrs Coysh was joined at the celebration send-off by her husband Dave, her mother, and five-day-old Dillon, the youngest of her five grandchildren.

Teddy bears and lil’ ones have fun outdoors

May 18th, 2012

Children of all ages dressed up their favourite teddy bears in creative outfits for the annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic last Sunday.

Beautifully decorated cupcakes were available for sale, while fresh local produce donated by local businesses was handed out to people at the picnic.

The police made a friendly visit to the park, as did the Toyworld bear who handed out prizes for winners of the best dressed teddy competition.

Children who had sick or broken teddy bears could take them to the medical stall, to be treated by doctors.

6-year-old collects teddy bears for hospitalized children

May 16th, 2012

Acts of kindness often come from unexpected places.

When Ethan Barnewolt’s sixth birthday rolled around in April, his mother suggested they do something a little different for his birthday party this year. Rather than bringing presents, the kids attending the party were asked to bring stuffed animals to donate to Proctor Hospital’s teddy bear drive, which runs through the end of May.

Kate Barnewolt’s father was in intensive care at Proctor for several weeks earlier this year. She and her family drove from their home in Kickapoo to visit often, but Ethan and his sister Edith Rose, 3, weren’t allowed in to see their grandfather. Hospital staff members were always friendly and attentive to the children as they waited for their parents to finish visiting, she recalled.

“Everyone was just so good to us and so good to the kids,” she said.

One day, Ethan and his mom saw a sign in the hospital elevator asking people to donate new or gently used teddy bears to the teddy bear drive. They can be dropped off in bins at Culver’s restaurant locations in Peoria and East Peoria.

The bears collected will be given to children who need a little extra comfort – those in the hospital’s pediatric unit and others like Ethan and Edith who are just visiting.

“Ethan is a sweet, kind-hearted little boy that loves his PaPa and wouldn’t bat an eye at paying it forward, in a 6-year-old kind of way,” his mother said.

Because of that, it was no surprise to her that Ethan jumped on the idea. His reason was simple and emblematic of his age and innocence.

“So they’ll be happy,” he said of the other boys and girls who visit the hospital on a daily basis.

With a wagonful of teddy bears and other stuffed animals in tow, Ethan and Edith delivered the collection to Culver’s. A manager there, so moved by the donation and story, called Proctor to let them know.

“It’s a good inspiration for a lot of us. Instead of getting gifts, he wanted to give gifts,” said teddy bear drive coordinator Edna Ng, mental health services manager at Proctor.

Barnewolt said the donation was just another way she and her husband try to instill life lessons to their kids.

“There is always someone having a bad day, and if our children learn early to be compassionate and giving, then they may be able to help someone at some time,” she said.

“God has blessed us and we have worked hard, so we are able to do small things for others. Proctor Hospital has been so good to my family and all of our children that there was no hesitation to do what we could for them.”

Wodonga teddy bears come out to play

May 14th, 2012

INSTEAD of hibernating in the overcast weather yesterday, a swag of teddy bears emerged to enjoy a picnic with their toddler owners in Wodonga.

The toys were on show as part of the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic staged in Les Stone Park by the Wodonga Library.

Among them were white bear Morris, who belongs to Nina Edwards, 5, and brown-shaded Chocky, owned by her sister Ivy, 2.

The Wodonga siblings enjoyed the opportunity to make teddy bear biscuits with sprinkles, and head bands and puppets.

“It was cold but we still had a great time,” mum Rhiannon Edwards said.

Also among the gathering of about 50 children was Wodonga mother Maia Dodds and her children Camila Ford, 2, and Marco Ford, six months.

Camila enjoyed blowing bubbles and driving a little car, with her teddy bear dusted off for the day out.
